SURVEYING
What is surveying?
Surveying involves the collection of precise measurement data of Earth’s surfaces on a relatively large scale. Some of its applications include transportation, land division, and building. In this discipline even though it has some minor variations in techniques, surveying practices are largely consistent worldwide.
What do surveyors do?
Surveyors conduct a wide variety of tasks focused on measuring and mapping land. Some of the tasks include conducting surveys, establishing property boundaries, creating maps and reports, ensuring compliance with regulations, collaborating with other professionals, and fieldwork and data analysis.
Women in Surveying
Alice Fletcher was the first American female surveyor. She became the President of the Anthropological Society of Washington in 1903 and the first woman President of the American Folklore Society in 1905. Her dedication to protecting American land is what started her surveyor career. She was also an anthropologist and played a key role in founding the School of American Archaeology. Her contribution to surveyor and anthropology opened doors for future generations and mainly women in this field.
